Melbourne Tango Photography Competition.

In conjunction with Rod and Belinda from Project NFT we are hosting a Photo Competition which includes a “People’s Choice” award. On Wednesday the 16th November all the work will be displayed for you to come, view and register your vote. The “Awards Night” will be on Friday 18th.

We are very honoured to have Mr Bryan Dawe as head of the judging panel. Bryan Dawe is best known as an Australian writer, comedian and political satirist, but is also known for his work as a songwriter, photographer and social activist.

He has been a regular collaborator of fellow satirist John Clarke in the form of mock interviews, currently appearing on the ABC TV for “The 7.30 Report”.

The event will consist of three categories:
- Best Tango Dance Photo
- Best Collection of Tango Photos
- Most interesting Tango Photo

This is a non-profit competition with the $5 per entry cost per category being distributed as the prizes.

20th Anniversary Milonga

Celebrating Sidewalktango 20th Anniversary.

Thanks to all who came and made this a most successful event.

A beautiful night with the best aspects of the Melbourne Tango scene present. That is: good music, good dancing, good company.

A big thank you to all Melbourne and interstate milongueros, who came and helped to create a rare and exceptional event: a special and historic tango celebration made manifest through the expression of a genuine milonguero dance experience (and all night long!)

Featured fantastic live music from Ritmo Tango.

The occasion also gave us beautiful tango performances throughout the day and night starting at 5.00pm with a fantastic show from Debbie and Greg.

Then and on through the night with shows from:

Jake and Kay, Christine and Scott, Damian and Tamara, Bill and Leigh, Zaman and Thilini, and Dave and Di. …..What a line up!

The dance performances were delicately spliced between massive milonguero dance sets from our awesome DJs:

Jarny, Nadim, Jake, David and Zamen

who kept the massed throngs of tango dancers on the floor continuously for a solid twenty hours with wave upon wave of tango rhythm inducing a very real mass tango trance experience. Exciting stuff indeed! you had to be there!

Brief History of Sidewalktango.

From 1987 -89 worked with Argentinian Tango performance group in Europe.
From 1989 to 1990 created a tango show called “The Sidewalks of Buenos Aires” performed in London, Barcelona and Paris. The show was briefly known as ”Tango Sidewalks ”. For the first of many times, brought together an ensemble of musicians to create a tango band, to accompany the show. 1989 began teaching classes in social tango.
In 1991 the company was renamed Sidewalk Tango and was based in New Zealand for five years. In Dec 1996 relocated to Melbourne.

Milonga and Vals are two essential components of tango dancing.

In these classes you will learn (or revise) the basics correctly, accurately and beautifully for Vals and Milonga rhythm.
You will take away enough to be able to dance and join in social dancing with ease.

Then following on from this stage, with the new heightened sense of rhythm we have just gained, we will look at some very clever, fun improvisational ideas to really spice things up.

BOOKINGS: workshop places are only available for pre-booked registrations. This is in order to keep numbers of lead and follow equal during the classes. To register for the workshop please write to:

The afternoon is then completed by our world famous Sunday Milonga and BBQ Supper.

“TANGO IMMERSION WORKSHOPS”

A Weekend of TANGO ARGENTINO Dance and Culture
30th and 31st January 2010
Participation available for all levels of experience.

Learn How To Dance Tango In One Intensive Weekend

Immerse yourself, find the point of no-return where you let go and tango across to the other side!

These workshops are aimed at people who have never danced tango before and want to get there fast or for those who wish to take their tango to a new level of competence and fun once and for all .

On Sunday, there will be a practica open to all tango dancers where the Immersion workshop participants will be able to mingle, meet and dance with experienced Tango dancers from the Melbourne milonguero scene.

Followed by an Intermediate/Advanced Workshop designed to freshen up technique, inspire new ideas and set the tone for a new year of sensational tango experience.

The weekend will be completed with a BBQ and Practica till 9.00pm

Celebrating the look, feel and style of the 1940’s in Australia and Argentina.
Come dressed in 40’s fashion.
The event is an afternoon milonga featuring screening of “Paper Dolls” a documentary on Australian Pin-up girls during the WW2, produced by one of our own milongueras, Yvonne Collins.
